The Utah Donut Index

Every type we make, what it actually is, and what it costs. Written as a reference rather than a menu — if you have ever wondered what separates an old fashioned from a cake donut, or what a kolache is, this is the page.

ItemTypePriceWhat it is
GlazedDonut$1.50 · $15.00 dozenA raised yeast donut dipped in a thin sugar glaze that sets to a shell. The baseline donut against which every other one is judged. Best within a few hours of frying, which is the whole argument for buying them early.
AssortedDonut$2.25 · $22.50 dozenWhatever the case is stocked with that morning — iced, filled, topped, sprinkled. Ordering assorted is how you get variety without choosing.
Cake donutDonut$2.50 · $25.00 dozenMade with a chemically leavened batter rather than yeast dough, so the crumb is dense and tender rather than airy. Holds a heavy glaze without collapsing and keeps better through the day than a raised donut.
Old fashionedHouse specialty$2.50 · $25.00 dozenA cake donut fried at a temperature and shape that makes the surface crack open, giving crisp ridges and a dense interior. The cracks catch glaze, which is the point. One of our two house specialties. Rings up as a cake donut.
Specialty donutDonut$2.75 · $27.50 dozenThe decorated ones in the front case — iced, drizzled, topped, filled. What is in the case changes with the morning and the season.
Buttermilk barSpecialty board$2.75 · $27.50 dozenA cake donut — not a raised one — shaped into a bar. Buttermilk in the batter adds a faint tang and splits the surface into craggy ridges that hold glaze. Same family as our old fashioned, different shape. Frequently confused with a Long John, which is raised. What a buttermilk bar is.
Long JohnSpecialty board$2.75 · $27.50 dozenRaised yeast dough shaped into a rectangular bar and topped along its length, maple or chocolate. The bar shape exists to carry more topping per bite than a ring can. What a Long John is.
BismarkSpecialty board$2.75 · $27.50 dozenA filled donut with no hole. Fried solid, then filled through a small opening in the side, which is why there is no ring. Ours come lemon and raspberry. What a Bismark is.
Bavarian creamSpecialty board$2.75 · $27.50 dozenA Bismark filled with vanilla custard rather than fruit. Same shape and method; richer and heavier than the lemon or raspberry.
PersianSpecialty board$2.75 · $27.50 dozenA large, soft, cinnamon-laced donut with a heavier crumb and a generous topping — closer in spirit to a cinnamon roll than to a ring donut, but fried rather than baked. A regional item that most shops do not make. What a Persian is.
Cinnamon twistSpecialty board$2.75 · $27.50 dozenRaised dough laced with cinnamon sugar and twisted along its length before frying. Chewier and easier to eat one-handed than a Persian, same flavour family.
Apple fritterSpecialty board$2.75 · $27.50 dozenCraggy and irregular rather than shaped: dough and fruit folded together so the surface is all edges and the inside stays dense in places. The most donut per dollar on the board. More on our fritters.
Buttermilk cakeCake donut$2.50 · $25.00 dozenThe ring version of the buttermilk bar, and the same batter as the old fashioned. Tangy, dense, craggy at the edges.
Blueberry cakeCake donut$2.50 · $25.00 dozenA cake donut with blueberry through the batter. One of the items reviewers name most often, usually alongside the blueberry icing.
Chocolate cakeCake donut$2.50 · $25.00 dozenCocoa in the batter rather than on the outside, so the donut itself is chocolate rather than a plain donut wearing chocolate.
Custom donutMade to order$3.00 · $36.00 dozenDecorated to your order rather than picked from the case: colours for a party, hearts in February, a team's colours for a Monday meeting. Call the shop ahead. See our guide to custom donuts.
CronutHouse specialty$3.99 eachLaminated croissant dough — folded around butter dozens of times — fried like a donut. Crisp and shattering outside, flaky and hollow inside. Buttery rather than sweet. Cannot be made mid-morning, so it sells out early. Full explanation.
Donut holesDonut$3.75 a cupThe centres, fried and sugared or glazed, sold by the cup. The most efficient way to feed a group of children ever devised.
Kolache — smallKolache$2.50 · $26.50 dozenA soft, slightly sweet enriched roll baked around a savoury filling. Ham and cheese, sausage and cheese, either with jalapeño. Czech in origin, Texan in its savoury form, and made by almost no other donut shop in Utah. What a kolache is.
Kolache — largeKolache$4.75 · $49.50 dozenThe full-breakfast version: bacon, egg, cheese and potato; sausage, egg, cheese and potato; sausage, egg and gravy; ham ranchero. One of these replaces a drive-through breakfast.
Dinner rolls — bakedBakery$6.95 a dozenMade from the same enriched dough tradition as the kolache, baked and ready to eat. Ordered most heavily around holidays.
Dinner rolls — frozenBakery$4.95 a dozenThe same rolls, unbaked, to take home and finish in your own oven so they arrive at the table hot.

Delivery

We are on DoorDash, and for larger orders and weddings the shops will often deliver directly. It comes down to the day and whether someone is free, so call the shop you want to order from and ask. For anything time-critical, pickup is the sure thing — and every shop is open at 5:00am.

Things we are asked for and do not make

Worth saying plainly so nobody drives out for something we do not have.

  • Edible photo-printed icing. We decorate by hand — colour, icing, sprinkles, drizzle and shape. Photo prints are a different craft.
  • Gluten-free or vegan donuts. We fry and bake in a shared kitchen with wheat, dairy and egg throughout, so we cannot honestly offer either.
